light weight and fool proof.
Some people complained it will not charge a totaly dead battery.
This is safety feature so it will not turn on if nothing is hooked up it.
To charge a dead battery - you have to give it a little pre charge to get it to about 1 volt so the charger knows something is actually hooked up to to it.
To do this:
1. unplug charger from wall
2. hook battery to charger
3. press and hold "display" and "type" button at the same time
4. while holding those buttons - plug the charger into wall.
* this will bypass safety features and charge the battery even if it is dead (assuming the battery can be charged at all)
- do not run in this mode for more then 5 minutes or you can damage unit and battery.
- this will get the battery enough of a charge so that the charger can detect a battery is hooked up to it (1 volt) .
5. unplug charger from wall.
6. wait 30 seconds and plug in charger into the wall. This will put it back into 'regular' mode and start charging your batter properly

Forgetting to remove the negative connector before storing my vehicle for the winter; the internal sytems and alarm drained the battery, and of course it was sulfated. This unit worked like a charm. The battery was down to 8 volts/15%. The SC-1200a properly began to charge, then desulfate, and slowly was able to get the battery back to 98% before I removed it to start the car. This took approximately 17 hours (700 CCA Battery), which isn't bad for a dead/sulfated battery using a charger costing less than $50. The plus is you can use it to maintain your battery on a vehicle you do not drive much. Keeping your battery charged above 98% can greatly extend the life. How long it will the charger last running 24/7? ...I do not know yet. I have only had it maintaining the battery for 3 weeks, but still no problems. It does have a cooling fan which probably should be cleaned/vacuumed occaisionally; and I've never felt the unit being hot to touch. Not sure what problem the first reveiwer had, or if the unit he had was defective or dropped before he purchased it. For a $50 charger which maintains and also desulfates a battery, you cannot beat it.

Put a new battery in a family member's vehicle.
Then the vehicle set idle in a family member's driveway for about 6 months.
(because they neglected to start and run the vehicle every week or two, the battery had fully drained)
Went to try and turn it over and nothing!
No dash lights, no dome lights, nothing.
I initially tried to charge this dead battery with an old style charger (one that weighs like 10 lbs+), a vector brand.
Set the charger to the 8amp charge setting.
After a hour or two there was no noticeable change in the battery.
When vehicle's battery cables were reconnected it still could not even begin to turn over the vehicle.
I had my doubts that something so lightweight like this schumacher 1200 could do better than an old school battery charger.
(I know that in theory, these newer tech chargers should be able to charge a battery more accurately and efficiently due to the
solid state circuitry they utilize vs the old style chargers).
So I went ahead and hooked up this Schumacher 1200 and toggled it through the various modes.
I finally set it to the desulfation mode. I heard the cooling fan kick on low and then high.
According to the digital display it was cycling between 12 to 16 volts. I let it run for about 3-4 hours.
I removed the schumacher 1200 and hooked up the vehicles battery cables again.
The vehicle easily turned over, just like someone had installed a new, charged battery into it.
This was rather impressive because the manual stated that the desulfation mode would toggle to the regular charge mode after desulfation was finished. Then when the battery was fully charged the charger's LED would go green.
The charger LED had not gone green when I disconnected it and reconnected vehicle cables to the battery.
I can't speak about the other modes of this particular charger, but it did revive my family member's battery without any problems and within a relativity short timefrme.
