By Jeffrey Wolan
Worked fine for me in just 5 min- just slightly flaky on initially connecting - but Iphone instructions weren't completely clear so here's the step by step that I did:
1) Plug it in to ODB2 port under your dash and set the car key to the ON position (don't have to start the engine) to read more data (wifi should work even off though)
2) Find the ELM wireless network on your iphone (settings - wifi) - mine said "CLKDevices" click connect
3) In iphone wifi settings change from DHCP to static
IP 192.168.0.5 (any ip other than .10 should work)
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Router 192.168.0.10 (you can probably leave this blank actually)
4) Get an app - I didn't research much and mainly just want this as a code reader and used Engine Link - (Torque Pro, Rev2 and many others should work too)
5) In your app connect to "192.168.0.10" and "port 35000"
6) Mine sort of connected (got a green light in app) but didn't get live data - I disconnected the wifi, turned the key to off and back on (and maybe replugged the ELM back into OBD2 port?) and it started working, stayed connected and I could pull CELs (trouble codes) and fuel/ live rpm when I started car etc etc.
Wifi Range is short - make sure your iphone is not reverting back to 4G or your home's wifi autojoin network if you are having problems.
Make sure to get the ELM327 Wifi version if you don't want to have to jailbreak your Iphone for Bluetooth (Android phones shouldn't have to)

By Padre C
Before buying this unit I researched and read all comments on the available devices. I settled on this one as it seemed to be the choice with the least negatives. WiFi instead of Bluetooth works for me since I'm using the iPad. I believe you need the Bluetooth if you are using an Android device.
The ELM 327 was shipped and received quickly, packaged securely in bubble wrap inside a sturdy, small cardboard box (I guess they saw the older review about the flimsy envelope packaging). Instructions provided were written well, in easy to understand English. I did have to fiddle around a bit to make it work, but I'll explain shortly. This is presumably due to my app choice.
Since I wanted to use this with my iPad, I researched the multitude of apps available, and finally decided to purchase OBD Fusion ($9.99 from OCTech,LLC). This combo worked perfectly on two different Toyota models. Here's how I set it up in case you don't want to 'fiddle around':
1. Install OBD Fusion app on iPad.
2. Head out to your car and plug the ELM 327 into the OBDII connector (usually white, and placed low on the driver's side beneath the steering wheel.) I did not have to turn on the key for the unit to get power and illuminate the LED, but your car may be different. If you don't get a power light, turn the car key to the 2nd 'click' position.
3. On the iPad, go to Settings, touch Wi-Fi, make sure Wi-Fi is set to 'ON'. Under 'Choose a Network', the ELM 327 shows up as "WiFi-OBDii". Go ahead and touch that. Press the white 'greater than' symbol in the blue circle to get into the WiFi settings. Make sure 'DHCP' is selected in blue. Set the iPad's IP Address to '192.168.0.11'. Set the Subnet Mask to '255.255.255.0' if not already set. Set the Router to '192.168.0.10' (which is the IP of the ELM 327.) Back out or close 'Settings'.
4. Start your car. Start OBD Fusion on the iPad.
5. Under OBD Fusion's 'Settings' select 'Connection Help' to see a well laid out explanation of setup.
6. Or... under 'Settings' select 'Preferences' and then 'Communications'. Under the 'Device' heading select 'Custom'.
7. In the 'Custom' chart, set the IP Address to '192.168.0.10' (which again, is the ELM 327). Set the Port to '35000'.
8. Touch 'Connect' in the main menu, and you should see the link being completed. If not, make sure all your settings are correct and try again. Mine worked flawlessly for both vehicles. You can then enter info (make, model, year, etc.) about the vehicle under test. OBD Fusion will remember the vehicle next time you use it because of the 'Vehicle Fingerprint'.
The OBD Fusion seems to do everything I need, including resetting the dreaded 'Check Engine' light. It also has built in GPS tracking on a map, a miles per gallon calculator, multiple gauges, and much more. What's not to like for a total of about $35.00?

I think this needs a review, and some tips for future buyers - first of all, when I was amazon shopping it seems like the elm code readers - obd2 interface modules are labeled and reviewed in a very clumsy way - this is a review for the wifi (not blutooth) wireless scanner module from OBD2solutions. Labeled elm327 WIFI wireless OBD2 car diagnostic reader scanner scan tool for iphone. Short story - It's just a module that plugs into your car, that requires software to run on a PC or compatible device like the iphone, and sotware will cost you extra. It did exactly what I thought, and was a great tool to solve the check engine light on my toyota 4-runner (2005).
So this came very quickly (in 4 days) in a padded envelope with a cd that surprisingly was not broken after shipping - i think i'd reccomend the seller pack in a box in the future. On the CD is a bunch of un-organized folders, and one PDF that talks about how to set this module up, but the instructions are for an expert - not very user friendly or for a first timer using wifi and obd2. There are lots of freeware programs, most are trial copys and do not actually support wifi 327 adapters - instead they work with USB(wired) or blutooth adapter versions, and my limited experience is that in general you will find more options for compatible software with those versions. WIth this wifi one I only found two or three that suppported the wifi communications. I got it to work (running on a laptop, internal wifi, with windows 7) with the touchscan software ver 2.14 from obdsoftware.net. its a $35 usd license(but you can use the free version to verify your adapter works and see the engine temp realtime, and with the software + adapter price and shipping, i think im in for about $80 bucks and that was a good deal for me.
What drove me to review, was that I went through every software on that included cd, and found that none seemed to work with the adapter, and worked with the whole package for a week, about two hours a night, to realize that most the inclded software was was not designed for the wifi. Also the two or thee software i found that did work were not on the cd, there were older non-wifi capable versions on the CD. and I had to download a newer wifi supporting version from the web
So shortly the process that worked was to set my laptop's wifi adapter( tcp / ipv4) statically coded to the ip address in the manual 192.168.0.11, and shut down the laptop, restart it, plug in the adapter, start the car, then connect to the adapter in my wireless networks, then set the touch scan software under communications to 192.168.0.10 using port 35000. The process was not sure fire - you may have to repeat a few steps, and maybe it doesn't work everytime....all of which is a bit time consuming and not too fun.
I also tried to connect my iphone, and could see the adapter, but wasn't too excited by the fact that the app i found called dash command did not have a free trial to verify it was functional with this adapter, so i gave up before i verified dash command, and didnt want to buy an iphone app, then move to an android, and have to re-buy. I'm really not a fan of apple anyways.
So that's the long story, and in summary, I don't know if this is some knock off unsupported adapter, maybe just a unusual type, but it does work, and is a real product, and i liked it after I got it to work and took alot of advil. I had a check engine light, and touchscan diagniosed it as a cyl 6 misfire - kind of makes sense since i just bought this car used from a private party and knew it needed a tune up, so I put a set of spark plugs in, cleared the code, now the lights off, it runs much smoother, and I think gets an extra MPG - so that will pay back my investment right off vs going to the dealer, and for me it was fun to play with the technology, and learn firsthand how to use an OBD2 (what I'm saying is i just finally bought a car that was new enough to have OBD2 - lol), and I used this to fix it and feel pretty smart
. Ifyou want a WIFI device, so you can drive your car around without a wire and monitor the OBD it - then this is cool, but it's kind of a unique device, and the USBversion seems more mainstream and i think i should have bought that - and more software options will work with that. I didn't test blutooth or see much - i think its been out there longer and I saw expensive software for it. (but I gather blootooth is unsupported like the wifi) the other softwares I saw for WIFI were over 100 USD, so if you want to go this route, save up first). Good luck, and have fun with it!
